The agency seeks to increase its forces after mistakes and internal retention difficulties.
The Secret Service has announced its intention to add 4,000 new employees by 2028. By expanding staff numbers, the agency intends to shorten working hours and reduce the time agents spend on the road. Officials said that the need for protection has risen and that “numbers are too low to meet those needs”.
Ten years ago, the agency announced that it would reach 10,000 employees by 2025. Various issues, such as administrative roadblocks, as well as the COVID-19 pandemic, caused the organization to fall short of its goal.
The Secret Service held its first accelerated hiring event at the end of 2025. Previously, an applicant would not receive a job offer until after 18 months or more had passed, a timeline which the agency has already reduced to less than a year, and intends to decrease by another 4 months.
Because of low numbers, the Secret Service has been forced to utilize other law enforcement agencies to help secure large, high-profile events. Poor communication between the Secret Service and other agencies was determined to have played a significant role in the missteps that led to the assassination attempt on President Donald Trump in Pennsylvania in 2024. This attempt was the first time a president has been fired upon since 1981.
